R.10. Thumb tape to sustain the inwards twisted 1st metacarpal after MWM

Start the tape on the proximal/dorsal end of the 1st metacarpal
and tape across the palm of the hand

to sustain the inwards twisted correction of the 1st metacarpal

Painful thumb. The pain is present during and (often) after the thumb activities.

IMPORTANT information and notes:
  • Apply tape in a lateral glide
  • If you make it worse, do the reverse taping (twist in the other way)
  • Re-tape every day for a week or so, until the pain is settled down
  • To avoid skin irritation use a commercial underwrap to protect the skin from friction and chafing.
  • Use non-stretch sports tape (20 mm) with underwrap (to avoid skin reaction)
  • Never leave the tape more than 48 hours
  • If there is any irritation remove the tape immediately.
  • Ensure that after taping the provocative movement is less painful and ROM is improved.
  • Ensure NO PAIN, no discomfort
